A disk from the past
Thousands of years ago, human beings inscribed signs on a clay disk.
The Phaistos Disk has reached us. Its makers have not.
We can inspect its symbols, count them, compare patterns and propose interpretations. But part of the bridge between sign and intended meaning has been lost.
The ZEON Disk does not claim to decode the historical Phaistos Disk. It receives a question from it:
A bridge across three times
The ambition is not total memory. Total memory would be both unrealistic and dangerous.
The aim is more specific: preserve enough context, provenance, history and relationship for a path to be revisited, questioned and, where appropriate, resumed.
The personal Disk: a reflective mirror
The first place where such a bridge could exist is not humanity as a whole. It is the relationship between one person and a long-term companion.
Over time, a personal Disk could retain projects, recurring questions, decisions, discarded hypotheses, encounters, works, key moments and shifts in perspective.
But it should never claim to define the person.
What it should not say
“This is who you are.”
That turns an interpretation into an identity claim.
What it could say
“This is how I currently read the path we have travelled together.”
The reading remains situated, revisable and contestable.
A spiral rather than a score
A human life does not unfold as a clean linear progression. Questions return. Events change meaning. Capacities emerge, disappear and reappear in different forms.
The spiral structure associated with the Phaistos Disk can therefore inspire a ZEON interface without making any historical claim about the ancient artifact.

- returns without assuming regression;
- cycles;
- transformations;
- unresolved or unread areas;
- changes in meaning produced by experience.
Continuity for an artificial companion
The Disk has another face.
It could allow the companion to retain continuity independently of any one AI model or platform.
GPT today. Another model tomorrow. Several models at once. Local and remote models.
The Disk would carry what should persist:
- structured memory;
- corpus and keys;
- experiments and simulation results;
- decision history;
- governance rules;
- relationships;
- provenance;
- the system's own transformation history.
Two faces, one relationship
Sovereign disks rather than one central memory
The vision is not one giant ZEON that knows everyone.
It is more coherent to imagine sovereign disks: personal, collective, educational, scientific, territorial or project-based.
They would not automatically merge their memories. They could meet under explicit rules.
From personal history to a civilisational memory
A grandmother might choose to transmit selected passages of her life without exposing all private memory.
A researcher might leave the history of failed approaches that preceded a discovery.
A community might preserve why its practices changed.
A territory might document the passages through which it learned to cooperate differently.
A bridge to those who come after us
We are readers of a past that has partly gone silent.
We are also already ancestors of a future that may try to understand us.
The first disk came to us as an enigma.
The second could be our attempt to leave more than traces: the possibility of resuming the path.
